India

The vast subcontinent of India is full of every superlative imaginable. The poverty and prosperity, the colours, the languages, the cultures. It is the birthplace of two of the world’s great religions. India is not a country that can simply be visited, it is an experience.

Jaipur, popularly known as the Pink City, is the state capital of Rajasthan and the centre of many of our art projects in India. The ancient city is a fascinating concoction of aromatic smells, spices, pollution, hustle and bustle. It is where Hindus, Muslims, Jains and Christians live alongside each other, sharing and celebrating each other’s numerous festivals. The streets are alive with vendors adorned in bright pink, orange, yellow and saffron robes. It has been a centre for trade in valuable gemstones and jewellery for many years. The artisans that depend upon this have stimulated growth in other areas and Jaipur is now one of the leading centres for art in India.

Our India base is in Jaipur, which is to the south-west of India’s capital Delhi. Here we have art projects in the slums, supporting special needs and HIV children. We also have fascinating projects working on projects founded by the royal families of Karauli and Awagarh, to the south and south-east of Delhi, where you could also live with the royal families themselves.

July and August are prohibitively hot and coincide with the monsoon rains which have quietened down by September. The ideal time to participate in the project would be between October and May, for a minimum of two weeks.
